Strawberries in Cavan

Enjoyed our first strawberries of this season at Lake Avenue House, when you grow and eat your own strawberries it is very hard to go back to the shop bought ones. These I had growing in pots on the deck, the strawberries in the garden wouldn’t be ripe for another week.

Cottage in County Leitrim

Spotted this cottage on a drive along Lough Rynn, Mohill, County Leitrim thought it was so pretty had to take a photo.

Slieve Rushen Mt, County Cavan

Slieve Rushen Mt, is between Ballyconnell and Bawnboy just a short drive off route N87. The mountain itself does not look very high but the views over West Cavan on into Leitrim are spectacular. The countryside below Slieve Rushen is laid out like a carpet dotted with farms, lakes and woodlands. The mountain itself is used by locals to cut turf, and by local industries to harvest energy using wind turbines.

The lake in the middle picture is Templeport Lake with St. Mogue’s Island.

THE TINKER’S CURSE

Michael Harding returns to the Irish stage with a wry, humorous and moving story about a Traveller who climbs Croagh Patrick to do penance for the sins of a lifetime. The joys and sorrows of life on the side of the road are revealed in this moving and dramatic story.

(The work is a result of ongoing collaboration with the members of the travelling community).

“Michael Harding’s newly adapted version of his own THE TINKER’S CURSE is a heart-searing, heart-searching piece of work, provoking tears and haunting the soul. If it doesn’t live in dramatic memory, we have neither folk memory nor capacity for pity” Emer O’Kelly, SUNDAY INDEPENDENT.

“Harding’s theatre is always unique, daring, entertaining and unmissable”THE IRISH EXAMINER.

Whole Wheat Banana Bread

At this time of the year bananas go brown so quickly so at Lake Avenue House  it is great to have a few recipes to use them up.

I got this recipes when we lived in America, tried a few others but think this is the best, great taste, nice and moist and freezes very well. This recipe makes 2 loaves of banana  bread

Whole Wheat Banana Bread

  • 8oz soft butter or margarine
  • 14oz caster sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 14oz plain flour
  • About 6 soft bananas
  • 3oz whole wheat flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoon bread soda
  • 150ml hot water
  • Nuts/Raisins if liked

Oven at 175c. Grease and line 2 loaf tins

  1. Cream butter/margarine and castor sugar
  2. Add eggs in one at a time, mix well.
  3. Mash bananas and add to mix
  4. In separate bowel sieve plain flour, salt, bread soda add whole wheat flour to bowel.
  5. Add flour to banana mix in 3 stages, use water in between if mix gets too dry. Might not need all the water.
  6. Bake for 1 to 1.30 hours, use skewer to check if cooked through.

Wasps Nest, Lake Avenue House

We have two wasps nest in the garden at the moment, the one on the left is the oldest and biggest, the one on the right was started a few days ago. Not sure what the nest is made out, it looks like paper but it must be some substance they make themselves.
